Detroit Jazz Fest

Sonny Rollins, Chick Corea, Gary Burton, Kevin Eubanks, Sean Jones, the team from Mack Avenue Records, Bernard Purdie playing with Reuben Wilson and Grant Green Jr, Charles McPherson, Pat Metheny, and Wayne Shorter to name a few.

Every year Detroit creates a once in a lifetime experience with more than 3 days packed with super star talent, for free!  If you're in or around the area Labor Day Weekend, this is the place to be.. they've got at least 4 stages going at any given time, stretching from Hart Plaza riverside to the heart of downtown at the Campus Martius stages.  That's where I'll be, see ya next week.

The Streets

Sever's 'death of street art' depicting Twist, Gemeos, Shepard Fairey, Bansky, Futura 2000, and Kaws.  Pretty bold statement, I can't speak for the validity of all these artists, but when I was coming up Futura was one of the originators to a lot of people, pretty much up there with Seen and Dondi.

Now I'm not saying what's right or wrong.. especially when it comes to people creating, put what you want in.. Really, I kind of like the piece here, but I like to look at both sides of the picture.  I know Kaws and Shepard paid dues.. no matter how you look at it, no one slides in at the top commanding top dollar for their work.  Doesn't that beat staying up all night honing your craft while holding a day job?  To me it's kind of ironic that this piece here depicting the death of street art was a legal piece.. how street is that?

Kaws

Ah Kaws, another artist now sunken under the label of selling out..  at least that seems to be what the old skull and cross bones are associated with nowadays.  I could care less that he makes some toys or whatever else now, when these started popping up on billboards and bus stop ads it grabbed my attention then, and I still like them now.

Check the clean Kaws logo on the catwalk up there, and the matching color scheme on some of these.

Slides in the piece so slick it looks like it's supposed to be there

Of course he's still doing billboards

Who wouldn't want their mark on a Hennesy bottle, or some custom Nikes?

So he's making some toys and doing comercial business now, is that selling out or making a living doing what you do?

Obey?

Some of Fairey's work here..

For me this kind of thing brings up the thought that, why didn't they use some of that space to do something big to really show how they felt?  I mean, I'm not a huge fan of Fairey or anything here, and I know that's not even a tear in the bucket for how many of these pieces of his are floating around, but if you're going to dis someone's work, you should show you got something to back it.
If I had a dollar for every time I've seen some kids walking around with the 'propaganda' t shirts or some kind of Obey apparel.. I have to laugh and wonder, do they know what they're representing or did they just grab a random tee at Sears or wherever?  It's funny to me, how big the whole obey thing got and how there's never a lack of ignorant people that unknowingly play themselves.  But it kind of seems like the jokes on them, and Fairey's got the last laugh all the way to the bank.

I can't really judge and laugh at people rocking his shit, cause they're just doing their thing, and I can't be mad at the man either for doing his.  Whether Fairey sold out or not, I can't call it.. but regardless what anyone says, he put in a lot of work over the years.  Here's some of the old roll ups.
